What the US needs to do to protect the power grid from Russian hacks

America's power grid is difficult to defend from hackers because of its enormous size and heavy dependency on digital communication and computerized control software.
Russian hackers penetrated computers of multiple US electric utilities back in March 2018.
More threats from Russia are possible, so electric utilities, grid operators, and vendors need to deploy multiple layers of defense .
Smaller and midsized distribution companies are more at risk for hackers.
