NASA and SpaceX launched astronauts into space from American soil for the first time in almost 10 years today.
Since the end of the space shuttle program in 2011, NASA has relied on the Russian space program's shuttles to get American astronauts up to the International Space Station - a necessity for furthering research and development when it comes to long-term space travel.
But, thanks to the commercial crew program , that's about to change.
Here's why it took so long to send a crewed rocket back to space from the US.

The dinosaur began floating around the cabin of the Crew Dragon as it entered orbit.

SpaceX just launched its historic mission to fly NASA astronauts to space

SpaceX just launched a historic mission for NASA: its first astronaut flight, and the first launch of humans from US soil in nearly a decade.
The rocket lifted off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 3:22 p.m. ET on Saturday, carrying astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley.
The launch is not a success until it reaches orbit, though, which is about 12 minutes after liftoff.

SpaceX is set to launch its first astronauts to the International Space Station on Saturday - a mission that would make history, but is not without significant risks .
Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, has said his biggest concern is not the rocket launch, though: It's safely returning NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to Earth.
Musk said he's worried about the Crew Dragon spaceship's asymmetric design, which he said has a minor chance of causing the spaceship to rotate.
Such a rotation, he said, could catch superheated plasma in the ship's escape...
