Signalling Equipment on Stilts Helping Storm-Proof West Coast Main Line

A section of the West Coast main line in Cumbria, which was wrecked by flooding for a fortnight in 2015, reopened in less than 24 hours this week thanks to lessons learned by Network Rail.
In 2015 a major storm damaged vital signalling equipment when the railway flooded at Caldew Junction just north of Carlisle.
Network Rail engineers had to carry out complicated repairs which forced closure of the busy main line to Scotland for 14 days.
In the months that followed Network Rail hatched a plan to raise the signalling equipment, which control train movements, on to 3m-high stilts.

Rail passengers are being reminded of essential canal bridge repairs which will close the railway for nine days in East Lancashire from this weekend.
Between 15-23 February one railway bridge near Accrington will be replaced and another at Rose Grove in Burnley - both over the Leeds and Liverpool canal - will be strengthened as part of the Great North Rail Project.
The East Lancashire line between Colne and Blackburn will be closed throughout the work. Sections of the line between Blackburn, Accrington and Burnley are also affected, with bus replacement services running to keep passengers...

Vital Repairs for South West Rail Line

Emergency works to repair a landslip beneath the railway between Kilmarnock and Dumfries will continue for a further four weeks.
The section of line has been closed since Monday after the weekend's storms caused the River Nith to erode an embankment beneath the railway.
Following detailed examination of the landslip by specialist engineers, the line is now expected to reopen for start of service on Monday, March 16.
Engineers are currently working to repair the 1,700 ton landslip beneath a 50m stretch of track near Holywood in Dumfriesshire.
