Hurricane Florence is sweeping the Carolinas, with some models anticipating more than 50 inches of rain and 80 mph winds in certain areas.
The National Hurricane Center 's predictions of both "catastrophic" flooding and "life-threatening" storm surges has kicked emergency relief efforts into high gear. Thus far, 1.7 million people have been required to leave their homes in the coastal areas of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, and millions of homes have been put under official watch or warnings for extreme weather conditions.

Hurricane Florence is forecast to dump about 18 trillion gallons of rain over North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Maryland.
That's as much water as there is in the entire Chesapeake Bay, or enough water to cover the entire state of Texas with nearly four inches of water.
North Carolina alone is forecast to get 9.6 trillion gallons of rain, enough to cover the state in about 10 inches of rain.

More flights canceled as Florence pummels Carolinas

About 1,100 flights scheduled for Friday and Saturday have been canceled because of Hurricane Florence, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware.com. That's in addition to more than 600 cancellations Thursday.

Live footage of North Carolina's Frying Pan Tower shows an American flag being ripped apart by strong winds from Hurricane Florence.
The tower is a coast guard station located 34 miles away from the North Carolina shoreline.
More than 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia have already been affected by the hurricane's intense downpour and winds.
Rescue initiatives are in place and forecasters believe the storm will worsen as it heads closer to the North Carolina-South Carolina line.

The newsroom of ABC affiliate WCTI12 in New Bern, North Carolina was evacuated while meteorologists were live on air covering Hurricane Florence .
New Bern - which was under evacuation orders - is contending with rising floodwaters from rainfall and the storm surge associated with Florence.
150 people remain trapped in New Bern, and FEMA rescuers are trying to reach them.
